HEALTH/ILLNESS POLICY

No child will be accepted with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, running crusty eyes, or unexplained rash or has had any of these symptoms within the last 24 hours.

In cases of colds, sore throats, and the like, a phone call to the Provider is required to decide on acceptance for the day. Should the child become ill during his/her day here, parents will be notified and we will determine the best course of action concerning appropriate care, which may include the child being taken home.

If a child is thought to have a communicable disease, parents will be notified and asked to pick/her up. The child will be isolated from the other children and given special attention and comfort until the parents arrive. The child will be accepted back when no longer contagious. All other parents will be notified of the possibility of a communicable disease and what symptoms to watch for.

 Medication Administration Policy

Both nonprescription and prescription medications, ointments, and creams can be given to a child if needed. Parents are required to fill out the Medication Administration Consent Form. Parents are to supply all medications in their original containers. These must be labeled with the child's name. All medication will be stored not accessible to children unless a child needs immediate access to their medication because their health will be significantly at risk. All administration of medication will be documented with date, time, quantity of medication given.

Release of a child/youth from daycare

Children will not be released to anyone other than their parent(s)/guardians, or the people on the alternate emergency pick-up list. Should an intoxicated person or one who appears unable to care for the child comes to pick-up a child, the appropriate authorities will be contacted, and an alternate person will be called. If a parent or alternate doesn’t come to pick up their child, by one hour after the end of class, and attempts to contact parents and an appropriate alternate have been unsuccessful, the Ministry for children and families will be contacted.

Abuse/Neglect Policy
All children have a right to live free from abuse. Children depend on their parents, family members, teachers and child care providers to love, nurture and protect them. As your child(ren)’s Child Care Provider, I have a duty to provide for the emotional and physical well-being of the children in my day care facility.
Defining Child Abuse and Neglect
Child abuse happens when somebody or some situation threatens the development, security and survival of a child. Many forms of abuse are criminal in nature.
Recognizing Signs of Abuse
Children show many different signs of abuse or neglect. While all children have scrapes, bruises and birthmarks, it’s good to know some common signs of abuse and neglect. Take them seriously and act quickly if they are happening to a child you know.
Reporting Abuse and Neglect
If any of the staff at Abby Meadows Day Care suspect a child is a victim of abuse or neglect, we have to by law report our concerns to the Ministry of Children and Family Development/Child Protection Services as soon as possible. We do not need proof. It is not our role to look for evidence or interview the child.
The abuse of a child is a serious problem. Everyone has a duty to report a suspicion of child abuse.

Nutrition Policy
Abby Meadows Day Care will provide two nutritious snacks throughout the day.Parents will be required to provide their children a sufficient healthy lunch to meet the developmental needs of the child. All snacks provided will be according to Canada’s Health Food Guide. Children will be provided juice at snack time and, have reasonable access to drinking water throughout the day while in care.

Reportable Incident Protocol

This process will assist in the prevention of recurrence and, in the promotion of a high standard of care, safety, health and dignity of the persons in care. All reportable incidents must be reported to Licensing within 24 hours. For a complete list of all reportable incidents, please refer to the Child Care Regulation Act & the Community Care Facility Licensing Act.

Behavioral Guidance Philosophy
At Abby Meadows Day Care our philosophy is that each individual child is unique and that they should be treated in a firm, fair, fun and friendly way. The goal of guidance is used to teach a child to become self directed. We take a positive approach in all our interactions with children. We teach three main patterns of behavior: respect for others, respect for property and respect for themselves. The children are explained the guidelines of the child care home frequently , so they become familiar with them. In order to help children become self directed we approach guidance developmentally. The following methods of guidance are used:
Modeling and teaching positive behaviors
Clear consistent limitations that are gently enforced

  • Modeling problem solving techniques to help children to solve problems by themselves.

  • Consistency and firmness

  • Fostering self esteem by accepting children's feelings

We believe that positive reinforcement, encouragement, offering choices, redirection, limiting setting, and joint problem solving are the most effective tools of guidance.  Each staff member at Abby Meadows Day Care evaluate and decide the most appropriate form of guidance to use with each situation.
